I am a strong supporter of public K-12 education and have used my position on the Joint Committee on Finance to ensure each student has the opportunity to succeed. Many school districts across the state have been facing challenges brought on by declining enrollment. I have been meeting with local leaders to listen and work toward solutions that support strong public schools, improve test scores, and prepare students for their futures.
I have fought to secure major funding increases for hospitals, mental health services, and long-term care, while supporting commonsense solutions like expanding telehealth to improve access in rural areas. I will always stand up for our local providers and work to ensure families can get the quality, affordable care they deserve.
This past session, I was proud to lead legislation that ensures healthcare for new moms and babies and incentivizes small businesses to offer healthcare to their employees.
Families across Wisconsin are feeling the effects of inflation, from groceries and gas to the rising cost of buying a home. I worked to pass a package of bills that cut red tape and make it easier to build more housing and bring down costs. I will keep fighting for policies that lower everyday expenses and help you keep more of your hard-earned money.
Since I was first elected, we have cut taxes by more than $30 billion. I was proud to author the state budget this past year, which included another $1.5 billion in tax cuts, including much-needed relief for the middle class and seniors.
With each budget, I work to ensure Wisconsin’s priorities are funded, and with the money that remains, we return your hard-earned tax dollars to you.
Using my role on the Joint Audit Committee, I work to ensure that state government is as efficient, effective, and accountable as possible. Strong legislative oversight helps shine a light on agency actions and ensures transparency for taxpayers.
On the Joint Finance Committee, I watch the state's checkbook to put us in a strong financial position. During the past state budget, we cut more than 300 unnecessary positions in state government to ensure your tax dollars are spent wisely and government works for you.
I am focused on the unique needs of the 17th Senate District. Every community I represent has priorities that matter deeply to the people who live there. I will always fight to make sure the voices of southwestern and southern Wisconsin are heard and represented in Madison.
When you or I are in trouble, we want to be able to call 911 and know someone will answer the phone and help us. I have regularly hosted Rural EMS Summits in my Senate District to identify ways that government can ensure that our local EMS and fire departments have the tools and flexibility to respond when needed.
I am a strong supporter of UW–Platteville and our technical colleges. Wisconsin has no shortage of outstanding schools that do an exceptional job of preparing students for the workforce. Our universities in the 17th Senate District excel at being nimble and responsive, listening to the community as they provide a high-quality education.
During the past state budget, I was able to secure funding for UW–Platteville to transform Karrmann Library into a student success center, along with planning funds to begin converting Ottensman Hall from an aging engineering building into a vibrant space capable of meeting the needs of students across a variety of majors.
